16 Book-to-Movie Adaptations in 2023

Tremblay's horror novel centers on two dads and their daughter whose idyllic vacation at a secluded cabin is interrupted by a terrifying home invasion. Soon, they discover that this is no ordinary crime, and their captors try to convince them to make a devastating choice in order to prevent an impending apocalypse — or is that just a cover story? Liam Neeson stars as the brooding private investigator Philip Marlowe in "Marlowe," the film adaptation of Black's neo-noir novel. Based on a character originally created by famed detective author Raymond Chandler, the story follows Marlowe on a case in the 1950s. A glamorous woman hires him to find her ex-lover, but he soon discovers that this one man's disappearance is only the beginning. Neeson is joined by Diane Kruger, Jessica Lange, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, and Alan Cumming in the movie's cast.

"Daisy Jones & The Six" might have made a bigger splash earlier this year, but another of Taylor Jenkins Reid's books, "One True Loves" also made its way on screen. In April, "One True Loves" was released, starring "Hamilton"'s Phillipa Soo and "Barbie" star Simu Liu. The book tells the story of a girl named Emma who plans a life with her high school sweetheart, Jesse, only for him to disappear in a helicopter crash on their anniversary. Emma tries to move on with her life, and eventually, she meets someone new — but then she discovers that Jesse is still alive.

Generations of girls have grown up with Blume's iconic novel about maturing, dealing with puberty, and figuring out who you are. After her family moves to the New Jersey suburbs, Margaret tries hard to fit in with her new friends, forming a secret club to talk about all the things they can't tell anyone else. The one thing that separates her from the other girls is Margaret's unique take on religion: she doesn't go to any church, but she secretly "talks" to God about everything in her life. Abby Ryder Fortson, Kathy Bates, and Rachel McAdams star in the film.

The romantic dramedy "Love Again" is an adaptation of Cramer's novel, which was previously made into a German-language film. Mira, a woman grieving the sudden loss of her fiancé, begins texting his old phone, not realizing that the number has already been assigned to someone else: Rob, a journalist who's surprised and touched by the heartfelt messages. Oh, and Celine Dion plays a pivotal role in the plot! Priyanka Chopra and Sam Heughan star, and, yes, Dion appears as herself.

Director Christopher Nolan returned this year with his latest epic: "Oppenheimer," based on the true story of J. Robert Oppenheimer and the biography by Bird and Sherwin. The film traces the life and career of Oppenheimer, an American theoretical physicist who is widely credited as the "father" of the atomic bomb developed in the Manhattan project — and who subsequently became one of the loudest voices against nuclear proliferation. Cillian Murphy stars as Oppenheimer, with an enormous ensemble cast including Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Rami Malek, Benny Safide, Josh Peck, and Josh Hartnett.

There have been countless adaptations of "Dracula" over the years. This time, it's one particular section of the book that's inspiring the 2023 film "The Last Voyage of the Demeter." Starring Corey Hawkins, Aisling Franciosi, Liam Cunningham, and David Dastmalchian, the movie retells one particular episode from Stoker's novel, where a ship bound for England suffers mysterious disappearances and the presence of the infamous vampire himself.

Casey McQuinston's "Red, White & Royal Blue" was adapted into an Amazon Prime Video movie starring Nicholas Galitzine and Taylor Zakhar Perez. Galitzine and Perez play a British prince and the US president's son, respectively, who often cross paths in international affairs. At first, their hatred for each other is palpable. But anger turns into friendship turns into lust — and, eventually, love. But will their responsibilities to their countries overpower their budding romance?

The book and movie tell the story of two best friends who are separated when one moves to Chicago, though they continue to keep in touch via letters. The pair's deep bond is the heart of the story, which also explores themes of family, identity, sexuality, and self-discovery.

"A Haunting in Venice," adapted from the novel "Hallowe'en Party," is the third movie in the series of Christie adaptations starring Kenneth Branagh as the famous detective Hercule Poirot. In this tale, Poirot is recently retired from the crime-solving business, but when a guest turns up dead at a séance, it's up to him once again to find out the truth. Branagh also directs, with an ensemble cast costarring Jamie Dornan, Tina Fey, Michelle Yeoh, and Jude Hill.

Iain Reid's "Foe" is about a married couple whose lives are changed forever when the husband (played by Paul Mescal) is sent to a space station. His wife (played by Saoirse Ronan) isn't alone, though — since he's replaced by a robot. Reid also wrote the trippy "I'm Thinking of Ending Things," and "Foe" is just as surreal and strange.

In 1920s Oklahoma, members of the Osage tribe were brutally murdered in a string of crimes known as the Reign of Terror. The hunt for the serial killer behind them, amid an oil rush, is explored in David Grann's 2017 nonfiction book "Killers of the Flower Moon." The "Killers of the Flower Moon" adaptation includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, Lily Gladstone, and Jesse Plemons.

The prequel to the Hunger Games book series goes back decades in the history of Panem to narrate how one boy grows up to become the fearsome authoritarian dictator President Snow. Here, he's an orphaned young man trying to excel at the Academy in the Capitol in order to take care of his family, only to be surprised at the conflict he feels when he bonds with a tribute he's assigned to mentor. Tom Blyth stars as Coriolanus Snow, with Rachel Zegler, Hunter Schafer, Jason Schwartzman, Burn Gorman, Peter Dinklage, and Viola Davis rounding out the cast.

"Poor Things," the new movie based on Alasdair Gray's novel of the same name, follows Bella Baxter (played by Emma Stone), a young woman brought back to life by an inventive doctor (Willem Dafoe). With no memories and no experience of the world, she sets out to experience all its wonders.

"Leave the World Behind" — based on the novel of the same name by Rumaan Alam — follows a couple (Julia Roberts and Ethan Hawke) who rent a vacation house on Long Island. It's interrupted when two strangers — played by Mahershala Ali and Myha'la — come to the house bearing news of a blackout. As the situation starts to collapse, they question who they are.

This version of "The Color Purple" is an adaptation of an adaptation, based both on Walker's novel and the 2005 Broadway musical adaptation. The story centers on Celie, a young Black woman growing up in the American South in the early 1900s. Over the years, she survives terrible abuse, finds (and loses) love, searches for her sister, and slowly discovers her own incredible strength. The movie cast includes Fantasia, Colman Domingo, Taraji P. Henson, Corey Hawkins, Danielle Brooks, H.E.R., Ciara, and Halle Bailey.
